A folyamatosan őrült kalandokba keveredő gibbon és makákó távozása óta az állatkertben nem történik semmi igazán izgalmas, egészen addig a napig, amíg az elefánt ki nem találja, hogy ő is ugyanolyan jól szeretne tájékozódni a sötétben, mint a vakond.
– Szagalapú az egész? – kérdezi tőle. – Nem is kell hozzá látnom?
– Dehogy kell! Csak csukd be a szemed, összpontosíts arra a szép, hosszú ormányodra, és már kész is az átállás.
Ezzel a végzetes tizenkilenc szóval kezdődik a történet, vagyis előbb az elefánt, majd a teljes állatkert kálváriája: a nagy félreértés, a háború, a mentőakció és végül a kibékülés.

Sometimes we feel sad on our birthday. Sometimes an elephant falls in love with a flamingo and a monkey with a raven. Nothing is perfect in the world of gibbons and macaques, which is why this deserted zoo is so familiar to us: if the monkey’s nest becomes uninhabitable, it has to be cleaned up, and sometimes it’s in the middle of a fight when we realise what the other means to us.
Sometimes friendships are just as inexplicable: the gibbon is the macaque’s best friend, and the macaque is the gibbon’s best friend, but why does such a stable fact change when nothing seems to have happened? Or can we still call someone our best friend even if we are a little further apart? In any case, a word of advice: if you and your friend move apart, always build a nest big enough to hold an old friend in case they return!
The antidote to imperfection in this book is humour and irony, while there is always a „grab-you-by-the-throat, back-stabbing feeling”, there is always a good laugh, accompanied by the playful illustrations of award-winning Alexandra Grela.
The first part of Gibbon and the Macaque series explores the theme of friendship and loyalty. Two further parts in the series have been published with the titles „And then came another!” and „The Great Misunderstanding”.
